Gingerbread Voodoo Dolls à la T(O)NM

Gingerbread Voodoo Dolls à la T(O)NM

Halloween has never been a big deal for me however I never need an excuse to participate in some themed baking.. I looked online for some inspiration and absolutely fell in love with Donna Hay’s Gingerbread Skeletons – but, I am a realist and I know that my decorative icing skills are not at all at the level that is needed to pull of successful skeletons. I am also yet to perfect different icing types for different applications so, with all of that in mind, I got my inspiration for this year’s Halloween backing from Not Quite Nigella.

The inspiration came from there, but the recipe is my own. These Gingerbread Voodoo Dolls are perfect for an afternoon baking session as – apart from the thirty minutes you need to rest the dough – it is an incredibly simple and quick process from start to finish. As I was making my batch, all I could picture was cooking with Bub. I want to be the kind of Mum that sends her child to school with homemade treats. I cannot wait to bake with Bub, and it is all I can do to not weep at the idea of the two of us covered in flower and laughing and Bub licking the spoon and decorating biscuits and cakes and cupcakes however he/she sees fit.

I also cannot wait to dedicate some serious time and effort into honing my baking and decorating skills on maternity leave. I never thought, growing up, that I would be such a keen baker. My mum used to make a mean rainbow layer cake for my birthday every year but besides that, we aren’t and never have been a baking kind of family. I find such calm and solace in baking, from the batter right through to insane amount of decorating inspiration out there at the moment. And, the best thing about baking as a hobby is that you get to eat the results and I really cannot think of anything better than that..

Anyway, I am going way off topic.

Gingerbread Voodoo Dolls

Ingredients –

150g softened butter

1/2 cup brown sugar

2 1/2 cups plain flour

1tsp baking powder

1/2 cup golden syrup

1/2 cup water

4tbsp ground ginger (I like my gingerbread super gingery, so, you just do you)

Coloured icing pens

Method –

Beat butter and sugar until pale and creamy

Add flour, baking powder, golden syrup, water and ginger to the mix and beat until combined as a smooth dough

Wrap the dough in cling wrap and refrigerate for thirty minutes

Between two sheets of baking paper, roll out the dough until about 5mm thick

Using a gingerbread cookie cutter, cut as many men out as you can before rolling out the dough again and repeating

Bake for 10 minutes or until golden brown

Once cooled, decorate your gingerbread voodoo dolls however you see fit!
